Sezgi Başak Kavaklı
I’m an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arts and Media at Louisiana State University Shreveport, where I teach courses on digital media, social media analytics, and journalism. My research examines how media shape public discourse on migration, polarization in journalism, and the evolving role of digital storytelling and data-driven reporting.
I hold a Ph.D. in Mass Communication. My dissertation, Media, Migration, Polarization: Can Journalists Help Mitigate Polarization Regarding Migration in Türkiye?, investigates the challenges and possibilities for journalism in countering polarization. My expertise spans research on migration, gender-based violence, audience reception studies of television, and data-driven journalism.
Beyond academia, I am passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice. I oversee The Almagest, LSUS’s student-run news platform, helping students develop their reporting and digital storytelling skills in real-world settings. I also work on media and technology-driven projects that engage communities, enhance journalistic practices and explore innovative approaches to digital storytelling.
